As the first episode of series 3 unfolded a young man on a scooter and a car driver had words on their way to work. When they arrived at Holby A&E they discovered that they were colleagues (staff nurse Cyril James and new SHO Dr David Rowe).
Meanwhile Ewart was feeling down and lonely after Elizabeth Straker had left to go to America. Her replacement Valerie Sinclair and Ewart were soon at loggerheads. Ewart fought to keep the observation ward open and went behind Valerie's back to her superior to secure the ward's future. Then, ironically in the very place he'd fought so hard to keep open, Ewart suffered a heart attack and died just minutes after comforting an upset Megan. Megan's life was falling apart and she confessed to Ewart that she was fed up of being 'Mrs. Reliable, Mrs. Mother Soddin' Earth'. Her husband Ted had moved to Cheltenham and they only saw each other at weekends. She was living in a pokey flat and was feeling very lonely.
Charlie took over the role of running of the department after Ewart's death and his more constructive, less cavalier attitude enabled him to get on well with Valerie. The two became close. Then as the series closed Valerie, who was forced to implement cuts, scrapped departmental porters which cost Kuba his job.
